Spanish Skincare Brands That Rival (and Beat) French Pharmacy Favorites

Posay, Bioderma. But Spanish skincare brands deserve just as much attention. The products are dermatologist-formulated, surprisingly affordable, and often stronger than their French counterparts. They just don’t have the same marketing machine behind them or the image of the ~effortless French girl~.

Here are the Spanish skincare brands I always look for when I’m in Spain, and the ones worth tracking down if you want that same European pharmacy magic, but the French brands aren’t doing it for you.

ISDIN: The Premier Spanish Skincare Brand

Not the first time I have mentioned ISDIN, but it really is the go-to sunscreen brand, and maybe the most famous of the Spanish skincare brands and it completely lives up to the hype.

Famous for: Fusion Water SPF 50. Lightweight, invisible, and no residue. The version sold in Europe uses UV filters that aren’t yet FDA-approved in the U.S., so it’s technically a different , and better, formula. I haven’t tried it, and it’s wicked expensive, but Eryfotona Actinica (this links to the US version, the version sold in Spain is a bit different) is another cult favorite for preventing sun damage and early aging. It has repairosomes that repair existing sun damage while protecting and hydrating your skin. I don’t know what repairosomes are, but people say this is an excellent product!

Beyond sunscreen: ISDIN also makes solid skincare, like Velastisa for stretch marks, Acniben for acne, Ureadin for dry skin. As far as I can tell, none of these are available for purchase in the States.

Why it works: Nothing fancy, no scent, no white cast , just good sunscreen! Also I am not sure what the ingredient is in some sunscreens in the US that turns everything yellow, but I have never had that issue with these.

Tip: If you’re visiting Spain, stock up on Fusion Water. Their regular sunscreens for the body are great too.

Cantabria Labs: The Retinol Powerhouse

Cantabria Labs flies under the radar outside Spain, but they have a bunch of great product lines focusing on different concerns like acne or anti-aging. They make sunscreen too, but they’re most known for their retinol products, which have a higher potency than French brands. The formulas are science-backed and quite strong, so make sure to research before buying these.

Hero product: Biretix Gel. A gentle retinoid treatment that delivers visible results without irritation. The whole Biretix line is good for acne. I like the gel, but it’s stroooong so be careful and start slow. I can only use this once a week personally.

Also try: Endocare Renewal Retinol Serum. Made with 0.5% pure retinol, which is stronger than most French pharmacy options, but buffered with soothing ingredients so it won’t wreck your skin barrier. My mother in law uses it and she looks great!

Perfect for: Anyone who wants dermatologist-level results without the prescription or the price tag.

It’s not widely sold outside Spain yet, so if you spot it in a pharmacy try it.

Gema Herrerías: The Under the Radar Spanish Skincare Brand

Gema Herrerías is a small pharmacist-founded Spanish skincare brand (from Seville) that’s gained a big following among Spanish dermatologists and skincare enthusiasts. I haven’t tried these yet (the azelaic acid is on my list), but here’s what has people excited:

Standouts:

  • Retinal-R 2000 serum — one of the few retinal products that’s both strong and gentle.
  • 5 Azelaic-S serum: supposedly good for acne and redness, both of which I suffer from sadly. This is the one I want to pick up next time I am in Spain.

Why it matters: Every formula is backed by real data and made entirely in Spain. It feels more “clinical” than commercial, which always speaks to me!

Not every pharmacy carries it, but it’s worth tracking down. You can check which ones stock it here (site in Spanish) or look for it on PharmacyClub.com.

Sesderma: The Active Ingredient Library

Sesderma is one of those brands that makes you wish every skincare line was this logical. Everything is organized by active ingredient: retinol, vitamin C, glycolic acid, you name it.

Known for: The C-Vit range (for brightness) and RetiAge (their retinol line). They are sadly very pricy, but the Vitamin C serum is really nice. Good texture, and absorbs quickly.

Why it’s different: Their thing is nanotechnology in skincare ( this is somewhat beyond the scope of my scientific knowledge but basically the idea is shrinking ingredients to help them penetrate deeper and release slowly over time.) It’s the difference between something that sits on your skin and something that actually changes it.

Best for: People who are looking for a specific active in particular, and want to buy based on that.

MartiDerm — The OG (Since 1952)

Before “ampoules” became a K-beauty buzzword, Spanish skincare brand MartiDerm was already doing it in Barcelona. Founded in 1952, it’s one of the originals — and still one of the best. They make these skin shots which are like super concentrated serums for specific things. I like the hyaluronic acid one but I want to try the salicylic acid ones when I am broken out.

Also worth trying: Cicra-Vass Skin Repair Cream. I picked some of this up when I was last in Spain because i use tretinoin and because it’s so dry there, sometimes my skin gets really flaky and tight. I put on a ton before bed, and my skin felt better immediately and looked better the next day.

Why it’s loved: It’s reliable, effective, and rooted in actual dermatology.

Where to Buy Spanish Skincare

You’ll find most of these brands at any pharacy in Spain (look for the glowing green cross). A few notes if you’re shopping:

ISDIN: Available in the U.S., but the Spanish formulas are different (and better). Look for Fusion Water SPF 50 while you’re here.

Cantabria Labs: Not sold in the U.S. yet. Found in pharmacies, Primor, and Druni, which often have the best prices. Their website lists everything, so you can plan ahead.

Gema Herrerías: Not in every pharmacy. Check stockist on their site or try PharmacyClub.com.

Sesderma: Available internationally, but cheaper in Spain.

MartiDerm: Easy to find in Spain and online at CareToBeauty.com, which ships globally.

If you can, shop in person! Spanish pharmacists are incredibly knowledgeable and often recommend products that aren’t even on your radar. Maybe you’ll discover some other great brands!

Why Spanish Skincare Brands Deserve Attention

French pharmacy gets all the attention, but Spain’s low key been doing the same thing, just with higher active percentages, lighter textures, less fragrance and fewer marketing slogans.

These brands are created by pharmacists, not influencers. The packaging is plain, the formulas are smart, and the results speak for themselves.

Basically don’t sleep on Spanish skincare brands!!
